Tredgold was a self-taught engineer who went through an apprenticeship in carpentry and cabinet-making before joining office of Architect to the Ordinance. Wrote several important trade and architecture books. This title is a great technical snapshot for mid nineteenth century, with such information as the cohesive force of a range of woods as well as of iron. The many plates show Tredgold to be as much an engineer as a carpenter. A smart book which is full of the information gained from experience. Later re-print editions are in much smaller, less impressive formats. Plates are impressive and quite building-related, rather than "just" geometric, which early building titles tended to be.
