Alfred Stieglitz.
(New York Atelier): 1938. 11" x 14", matted to 16" x 20". Gelatin Silver Print. Pencil-signed lower right. Perfect condition. Item #857
Lotte Jacobi was very much aware of her position in the world of photography, and felt she was an artist, not a commercial photographer. She also photographed all of her colleagues, in New York and Berlin. She was particularly drawn to Alfred Stieglitz, even though her photographs of him are rather scarce. This image, take in New York in 1938, is perhaps the only image of the great artist and art dealer when he is actually smiling. It is clearly an interpretation on Jacobi's part, to show the human being in the famous artist. The large (11 x 14) papered images of Jacobi's photographs are very uncommon.
