After sitting for a series of photos for Lotte Jacobi (some with his daughter Ida), Chagall was presented with the resulting images. After studying them carefully, he pronounced, "I now understand photography as art!" High praise for Jacobi's work from one of the premier artists of the twentieth century. In the images of Chagall and his daughter, one sees the profound love the two share; she was the light of his life and it comes out in this image.
