Originally issued in 1916, almost as a 'travelogue,' one wonders how the author escaped the ravages of the first world war. This is a direct re-issue of the 1916 first editon, and clearly there was much interest in the subject: the last page of the text announces the 'recently published' pendant piece, "More Small Italian Villas and Farmnouses." (see the next entry for a copy of it). This is an impressive and ambitious project, seen as a reflection of the pursuits of great Italian artists of 600 years. Guy Lowell harks back to Goethe's Italian Journey as well as Boccaccio and "Mrs Wharton." From the first chapter: "This study of the shell, of the dwellings, great and humble alike, is in itself of importance because many of the artists of the Renaissance were born in the simpler sort of surroundings we are going to study."
