Viollet-le-Duc was a 19th century French architect and restorer who heavily influenced the theory, preservation, and recreation of medieval stained glass. In Volume 9 of his famous Dictionnaire Raisonne de l'Architecture Francaise (published in 1868, he wrote an extensive essay on "Vitrail," detailing the structural and aesthetic superiority of medieval stained glass. This English translation by architect Francis Palmer Smith helps make this study available to a wider audience. An important and scarce title.
