Nineteenth-century restorers transformed the appearance of all but a handful of churches in Leicestershire. Whenever possible, things were made to look medieval (or what was supposed to be medieval). This is well known; much was written about them at the time, and they were frequently discussed by later writers on the activities of the Gothic Revival. One further dramatic feature of 19th-century change is the removal of rendering on church walls. Despite its obvious aesthetic and archaeological importance, this attracted little theoretical discussion at the time and still less since. This paper aims to help redress the balance.
