Alphabets Old and New; for the use of craftsmen, with an introductory essay on 'Art in the Alphabet'
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. Third edition, reprinted. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Octavo, pp. 256, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings. Very Good. Item #23799
A book of alphabets, for the use of artists and others who have occasion either to work in the manner of some given period, or to design lettering of their own. A feature in the book is the quantity of illustrations showing the difference it makes in the character of the lettering, whether it is in wood or stone, in stuff or leather, in mosaic or stained glass. This third edition is much more fully illustrated than the earlier editions, especially the penmanship of the 17th century. A wonderful overview, written by perhaps the world's expert on the subject.
