James Knowles: Victorian Editor and Architect.
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1980. First edition. Cloth over Boards. Octavo, pp. 382, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Very Good in Very Good DJ. Item #23590
Sir James Thomas Knowles (1831-1908) was an English architect who started his career designing a residence in West Sussex called Aldworth for Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and later became an editor of considerable energy. He founded the Metaphysical Society, edited the Contemporary Review, and founded and edited his own monthly review, the Nineteenth Century. This study examines the way he bridged the two disciplines of writing and architecture and it especially illuminates the interplay between literary and architectural medievalism. This work balances biography with trenchant literary reference and succeeds in giving a lucid general view of this rich area of Victorian life.
