Portrait of Berhe Morisot.
1872-1874. 15 of 24. 8.75" x 10.75" page, actual image 3" x 4.5" Very Good. Item #23078
This etching of the important Impressionist Berthe Morisot, whose art significantly influenced Manet, was done in 1872, probably just after the much more famous painting of the same subject now at the Musee d'Orsay, "Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets." While both present Morisot in black mourning dress, in the painted version, buttery exttures, an enchanting play of light, and Morisot's wide eyes all coalesce to develop a sense of intimacy and approachability. In the etching, Morisot's mourning attire becomes invested with much greater emotional depth. Here, Morisot is shown leaning slightly forward, and her dark eyes shift from inviting to penetrating.
