Taken during WWII, when Benjamin Britten was living in New York, at the home of German emigre (and friend of Jacobi) Elisabeth Mayer. The image is of Pears and Britten at Mayer's Steinway, below an oil painting by fellow friend Lyonel Feininger. Reproduced in Mitchell/Evans, "Benjamin Britten: Pictures from a Life 1913 - 1976."
