Biological Growths on Sandstone Buildings; Control and Treatment
Edinburgh: Historic Scotland, 1997. First edition. Perfect Bound. Quarto, pp. 40, illustrated with b/w drawings and color photographs. Ex-library markings. Very Good. Item #22787
The control of biological activity and plant growths on historic masonry of the historical monuments in Scotland was routinely carried out using a variety of "approved" treatments, but there was some disquiet expressed that these applications may be damaging the physical fabric to which they were applied. A program of further research was commissioned, and the findings of that detailed study form the basis of this publication, No. 10 in the Historic Scotland Technical Advice Notes series. Sections on types of biological growths and their recognition; the nature of sandstone; factors influencing biological growths on buildings and monuments; deterioration of sandstone; biocides; application of biocides; alternative methods of control of biological growths; and health and safety issues. A very useful publication for those who work with sandstone structures. These historic Scottish technical publications are quite scarce in the US.
