The Mount was a beloved summer estate of Edith Wharton, the noted American author of 21 novels, 11 collections of short stories, 9 works of non-fiction, and numerous articles and reviews. The house was constructed in 1901-1902 to the design of Francis L. V. Hoppin. It embodies the ideals of a classical house. This historic structure report was the first step in the preparation and implementation of a comprehensive program for the long-term preservation of the mansion. At the time it was written, the building was in need of extensive stabilization and restoration. From the Old House Journal reference library.
