Knight's American Mechanical Dictionary (3 volumes, complete); a description of tools, instruments, machines, processes, and engineering; history of inventions; general technological vocabulary; and digest of mechanical appliances in science and art

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1872-1876. First edition. Boards. Small quarto, pp. 2831, illustrated with b/w line drawings. Very Good. Item #22516

Besides the normal dictionary format of engineering and manufacturing terms, subject-matter indexes are introduced in their alphabetical order throughout the body of the work. For instance, there's a subject-matter index on agricultural and husbandry implements, and each item in that list is treated fully in its alphabetic place in the dictionary. That one subject-matter index listed over 500 topics, such as hay fork, thrasher, scythe, shovel, corn husker, cider press and cotton gin. These three volumes contain a lot of information in nearly three thousand pages!
