Victorian Splendour: Australian Interior Decoration 1837-1901.

Auckland: Oxford University Press, 1982. Second Printing. Boards. Quarto, pp. 161, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket. Item #21937

An authoritative and well-illustrated book from Oxford that takes a detailed look at the Australian traditions of Victoriana. This book celebrates the Victorians' enthusiasm for ornament as it is full of many rich and vibrant examples. Additionally, the author intelligently outlines the Victorian approaches towards interiors, exploring how the use, the form, and the importance of a room would shape the choices of color, of shape, and of style. This book is rich with examples of intact Australian Victorian rooms -- from a mansion to a cottage. It considers whole-room and whole-house decor rather than simply trotting out a series of images of, say, fireplaces. One wishes, alas, that this book could be longer.
