Many workmen in the 19th century carried with them a small memo book, in which they noted down the rules for doing various jobs of work, and items to assist them in estimating. This book was begun in this way: the author adding rules and other information from time to time, until he conceived of the idea of having it published, with additions and illustrations, for the convenience of other workmen like himself. An authentic window into carpentry in the late 19th century.
