F. W. Devoe & Co. traces its origins to 1754 when William Post began selling paint on the East River waterfront. The company expanded rapidly during the mid-19th century, moving its offices and acquiring manufacturing facilities in 1855. At the time this catalog was issued, the company was manufacturing "colors of all kinds, either dry, ground in oil or water, or in pulp, ready-mixed paints, colors in japan for coach and carriage and railway car painting, and fine varnishes and japans, with every variety of brushes, artists' materials generally, and mathematical and surveyors' instruments." A scarce artists' materials and supply catalog from a well-known paint and supply manufacturer.
