Pittsburgh, PA: Eagle Paint & Varnish Co., nd c. 1940. Original edition. Paint samples in cardboard box. Box 5.25" x 4.25" x 0.5", containing 30 paint samples measuring 3.75" x 5". Each sample has its color on one side, and identifying name and catalog number on the reverse. Packaged with the samples is a plastic image of a house, with the siding left transparent so that it can be set upon any of the samples to view what it would look like on a house exterior. Good; box and samples are worn, one sample has a 1" strip missing from it. Item #21169
A very unusual advertising item! Eagle Paint & Varnish dates back at least to 1897, and incorporated in 1933. The plastic viewer helps date this sample box to approximately the 1940s. Each sample is given a shade number in "M.B.C. Paint" and in "American Paint." M. B. Cochran founded the company, so this appears to be an early sample box. Scarce; we've never had a sample box like this before.
