Small quarto, pp. 770 plus 6-page publisher's catalog, illustrated with b/w engravings, including a fold-out map of the centennial grounds in Philadelphia. Library bookplate inside front cover. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first official World's Fair to be held in the US, was held in Philadelphia from May 10 to November 10, 1876, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Neary 10 million visitors attended the exposition, and 37 countries participated in it. The exposition was designed to show the world the United States' industrial and innovative prowess. Some of the inventions displayed were Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, the Sholes and Glidden typewriter, Heinz Ketchup, Hires Root Beer, and Wallace-Farmer Electric Dynamo (precursor to electric light). The right arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty were showcased at the exposition as well, and visitors could climb the ladder to the balcony. This volume describes the exhibits, buildings, and events that took place during the exposition. From the Old House Journal reference library.
