Brick and Marble in the Middle Ages; Notes of a Tour in the North of Italy. Copiously Illustrated.

London: John Murray, 1855. First edition. Half-Leather. Octavo, pp. xx, 287. With 74 illustrations, some in color. Fair, exlib OHJ library. Item #19971

In twenty years of gathering books on building materials, this is the first copy of Street's architectural travels through Europe we've ever come across. An uncommon book, which reads like a Baedeker travel guide. The tagline "copiously illustrated" also says a lot: the author made numerous on-site drawings on wood, and had them turned into wood engravings for the book. Pictures here are pavements in Verona and examples of Italian building brickwork.
