The book is an important document of German exile, both its publisher and the artist left Germany to escape the Nazis. With the success of Scharl's illustrations for the Pantheon edition of Grimm's fairy tales and with this publication, Scharl's career was in an upward swing. When he died in the 1950's, Scharl's friend Albert Einstein wrote the eulogy. Scharl's protrait of Einstein is among the works reproduced here.
