London: John Weale, 1835. Posthumous Reissue. Original Cloth over Boards, dark green. Small quarto. All aqua tinted prints, 20/31 hand colored. Depicting elevations of rural houses, with some floor plans. Very Good. Item #18271

Edmund Aikin was a founding member of the London Architectural Society. This volume depicts his designs for villas and includes a critique of the Gothic style in domestic architecture. He incorporated "eastern", or Islamic styles, inspired by buildings shown in "Views in India" by William Daniell (1785-1788). The plates and drawings in here are some of the most beautiful architectural renderings from this period we have seen. An extremely scarce volume!
