Hans Trombock, who's father was a boiler maker, was a brother among 16 siblings. He trained briefly as a painter, worked in mines, traveled to America, joined riots and revolutions, was imprisoned, and then became a vagabond artist in Germany. He made his living selling drawings of prostitutes, tramps, and fellow vagabonds. This is his first major work - a telling record of life just before Tombrock was forced to leave Germany to escape facism.
