Included in the list of the most beautiful books for 2003, printed in a limited edition of only 500 copies, this work is the first major attempt at cataloguing the work of a giant in twentieth century bookmanship, both in Germany and in the United States. Legendary rarebook dealer Juergen Hostein has treated us to a checklist of 295 of his collected Salter jackets and bindings, most of which are illustrated in color. Beyond that, he has given us the first major checklist on literature concerning the design of bookjackets. While Salter's Weimar era career is the major focus of this very readable (in both German and English) study, the last chapter deals with his illustrious career in the United States, where Salter lived from 1934 until his death in 1967 and where he produced some 600 (!) bookjackets. For a review article on Holstein and his Salter bibliography see op magazine's Sept/Oct 2003 issue.
