Dunbar, an African-American poet and the son of slaves, was a popular writer with white and black readers alike. He often wrote in dialect and his subject matter included folk tales and traditional stories. This collection of his poems is illustrated with photographs taken by students at the Hampton Institute, a school for African-American and Native American students.
