Item #13155 "The Pool" Etching. Whistler, James Abbott McNeil Whistler, American.

"The Pool" Etching.

1859. Very limited. Print size 9" X 6", etching on laid paper. Printed in black ink. Matte size 16" x 20" Very Good. Item #13155

A very nice copy of a scarce Whistler etching. "The Pool" was issued as Plate 7 in the series "Sixteen Etchings or Scenes on the Thames and Other Subjects" aka the Thames Set. It depicts the pool at Wapping, part of the port below London Bridge where ocean-going vessels docked and were unloaded. Together with Black Lion Wharf (Kennedy 42) and Eagle Wharf (Kennedy 41) The Pool is among the most dramatic of the Thames prints. This print depicts a "lighter" man in the foreground, looking out at the viewer. Behind him, the lighters filled with coal in the middle-ground lead the eye to the docks in the distance.
