There are chapters that describe the geology in general terms, and then sections for individual minerals, such as Potsdam sandstone, magnesian limestone, fossiliferous limestone, Hudson River slate, and more. Other sections cover building materials such as limes, cement, and brick, and ores such as iron, zinc, and copper. A chapter on manufacturers' materials includes clay, sand, fossil fuels, water, and more, and closes with a chapter on soil.
