Paris: Ducher et Cie, 1878. First edition. Bound in modern red half leather with marbled boards, gilt title on spine. Folio, pp. 43 of text (in French) with b/w line drawings, plus 75 full page chromolithographic plates. Very scarce and beautiful collection of brickwork and details of French buildings with polychromatic brick facades, all gorgeously rendered. The chromolithiographic plates were lithographed by Daumont and printed by Monrocq. They illustrate various ways to use brick as a decorative element in building constructions, also chimneys, pillars, enclosure walls, gates, etc. Many examples of complete buildings are depicted, some with ground floors and cross-sections. Some architects represented are: Ed. Guillaume, Gabriel Davioud, Duvillers, Delarue, Galand, A. Feine, Eug. Le Maire. The text by G. Detain gives, apart from the technical descriptions, also a historical survey of the brick as building element and a survey of the different types of brick. One of the most attractive portfolios of brickwork we've ever seen! A great collection of architectural art.
