Part of the material in this volume was used by the author for a course in modern timber design given as one of the engineering, science, and management defense training courses at Tulane University. Since then, the original material has been revised, new subjects have been covered, and many illustrative problems have been added. The present volume was used in a comprehensive course in timber design given to first-semester seniors at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. The book is intended not only as a textbook but also as a guide and reference for practicing engineers.
