Premier Showing Working Model Of The World's First Passenger Conveyor Subway.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
Oblong quarto, fold-out pamphlet, pp 4.
This invention was designed to bypass underground connections with a giant conveyor belt with clear, bubble shaped cars. This is what Goodyear proposed in 1951 to transport 60,000 New Yorkers daily, a third faster than the subway. $3.8 million was budgeted to construct this! A year was spent testing its design including making sure that women in high heels could negotiate stepping in and out. But health care won the battle for budget dollars and the project was never built. Now pedestrian conveyer belts are ubiquitous in major airports! An uncommon public relations piece and collectors item.
