The Victorian Gardens: The Art of Beautifying Suburban Home Grounds, a Victorian Guidebook of 1870 (copy from the reference library of "Old House Journal").

[Victorian Gardens]. Scott, Frank J.

The Victorian Gardens: The Art of Beautifying Suburban Home Grounds, a Victorian Guidebook of 1870 (copy from the reference library of "Old House Journal").

American Life Foundation Watkins Glen, NY 1982 Octavo, pp. 274, with a new introduction by David Schuyler. Beautifully illustrated.
Facsimile reprint of 1870 edition. Published at a propitious time, of post-Civil War growth and at the development of streetcar access to suburban neighborhoods. Scott saw this piece as a supplement to the books of his teacher A. J. Downing. He had a somewhat idealized view of nature and saw "suburbia" as an alternative to the urban areas which were also quickly emerging. An important nineteenth document, one belonging in any historian's (and landscape architect's!) reference library. Uncommon, even for a reprint edition.
